Our CD+G Collection
Editorial by Barb Tomlin

When I picked up our first CDG machine, I also purchased some of the CDs distributed under the machine manufacturer's label. Then I began to search locally as well as on the Internet. It didn't take me long to figure out there was a difference in what each publisher has to offer. Unfortunately, even if the quality of one publisher's production exceeds another, you will find you have to purchase from just about all of them because the particular song or artist's work you are seeking is only available from one source. My two favorite publishers to date are Chartbuster Karaoke and Sound Choice. To date we have managed to collect over 100 CDGs, giving us over 1,500 cuts to select from.

Following are brief descriptions of the CDGs we have managed to collect to date. In some instances you can click on highlighted titles to browse available song lists. In my "spare time" I'm busy preparing a database of our collection that you will soon be able to search online. If you are interested I can send you a PDF file listing our current collection by artist or song title.

Our CD Music Maestro Collection
Folk Favorites - We have only one CDG from Music Maestro to date. We wanted some popular folk songs that we could only find in their inventory. Music Maestro recently redesigned their web site to faciliate easier online ordering. The publisher is located in El Segundo, California.

Our Chartbuster Karaoke Collection

To date, this is our favorite publisher, especially for country music. If you are just getting started, we highly recommend their Essential 450 Collectors Edition (ES450), Essential packs, and artist series.

Chartbuster grants permission to record their background music with your voice for $75 per song.

Our Just Tracks Karaoke Collection
When we searched for Andew Lloyd Webber music we found only one source. The same company also had an extensive collection of Neil Diamond hits so we picked them up, too. Just Tracks are published by MMO Music Group Inc. You can get permission to use the background tracks in producing your own performances on CD for distribution. You will find licensing information on the Pocket Songs Web Site.

Our Monster Hits Karaoke Collection
Gary's two favorites in our collection are the classic male pop CDGs published by Monster Hits. I found them at Lesmen's in Albuquerque but to date, we have not been able to find any further information about the publisher.

Our Pocket Songs Collection

Pocket Songs are published by MMO Music Group Inc. You can get permission to use the background tracks in producing your own performances on CD for distribution. You will find licensing information at the Pocket Songs Web Site.

  • Michael Bolton's Greatest Hits - PSCDG 1085
This one includes a cut of You Send Me but the publisher was not able to get the rights to reproduce the words on screen for karaoke.
  • Michael Bolton Vol. 2 - PSCDG 1107
  • Righteous Brothers/Everly Brothers - PSCDG 1403
This CD includes 10 cuts, each with an instrumental and vocal version.

Our Singing Machine Karaoke Collection

All of the Singing Machine CDs contain four songs; each with one rendition of background music and the other with vocals singing the melody. These were the first CDGs I purchased. Following is a list of what we have:

  • Christmas Songs Volume 1 - G9901
  • Christmas Songs Volume 2 - G9902
  • Motor City Hits - SMCDG 9125
  • 60's Hits - SMCDG 9127
  • The Beach Boys - G9154
  • Kool & The Gang - G9146
  • Female Country Classics - G9142
  • Le Ann Rimes - G9147
  • Country Classics Volume 1 - G9131
  • Garth Brooks - G9156

Our Sound Choice Karaoke Collection

Sound Choice has a karaoke history of over 15 years now. While it is often the first choice for professional karaoke jockeys who have been in business more than two years, It is our second choice for favorite publishers. If you are searching for current popular hits, though, you can count on this publisher to have the best cuts of them available first. We have the following Sound Choice CDGs:

If you are a professional Karaoke jockey, you should check out their line recorded especially for seniors.

Our Sweet Georgia Brown Karaoke Collection (sweetgeorgiabrownkaraoke.com takes you to karaokewh.com)

I found the Sweet Georgia Brown CDs to be the lowest in quality. While the background music sounds fine, the graphic letters are lower resolution and difficult to read on television screens. I've also found that there are a lot of misspellings, some of the lyrics are wrong and on some of the discs, the changing of the colors does not match the music timing. If you know the song, though, their recordings are adequate. Typically, these discs are much cheaper. We have the following Sweet Georgia Brown CDGs:

  • Female Country Superstars - SGB0015
  • Shania Twain - SGB0019
  • Country Classics - SGB0041
  • Female Super Hits - SGB0021
  • Super Standards - SGB0037
  • Hot Country Hits - SGB0017

When it comes to purchasing karaoke CDs, I prefer doing business locally with Lesmen's on Lomas in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They offer discount pricing and superior customer service. In fact, I recommend searching for the titles you want through the publishers' sites on the Internet, jotting down the publisher's CD inventory number, then calling Steve Hill at Lesmen's to place your order. Of course, you can visit Lesmen's web site but orders are processed faster if you call them in. Online I order most of my CDGs from Karaoke.com.
